Hybrid. The longer term players in the market have looked to embrace the emerging technologies via enhancing their product range by bringing out new 'IP' solutions with backwards compatibility to their traditional products. Even in 2006, VoIP was considered in some circles as bleeding edge technology so the hybrid solution seemed a perfect fit - all the benefits of the traditional TDM solution with all of the benefits of IP. This also means that organisations with large TDM installed bases are able to phase migrate to IP. The downside to this however is that hybrid is therefore almost by default a compromise and those organisations that are looking to truly embrace and take full advantage of IP will have to accept the compromise of hybrid if they adopt this style of solution. Each hybrid shows its true colours on an in-depth look at the technology and its deployment throughout the network.
Pure IP. New players have emerged into the Voice market that have no legacy traditional hardware and are therefore able to offer pure IP solutions. These solutions are unable to offer TDM endpoints as there is simply no need, and either come as hardware appliance solution or software only. The potentials with pure IP are vast; however there are of course pitfalls.
