Guild Care – Business VoIP Phone System Upgrade

guildcareGuild Care are an innovative and life-changing care service which helps people with special needs, those with dementia or a learning difficulty, and their carers, to share and enjoy a richer family and community life; they have numerous sites in Worthing, consisting of a mixture of care homes, charity shops and a head office site for admin staff.

The Challenge

As part of a review process to see how the Voice Network could be improved, it was identified that Guild Care’s previous voice system no longer fitted the needs of the organisation. Poor inter site connectivity, complex administration and inefficiency were just some of the issues.

Design goals for the future solution were clear: cost effectiveness, seamless connectivity between all sites, flexibility for expansion & the ability to extend use to the care home residents as a service.

Solution

An innovative solution was proposed by MintTec. By upgrading the WAN (Wide Area Network) across Guild Cares multiple sites from ADSL broadband to cost effective EFM (Ethernet First Mile) this would enhance their data capabilities providing them with centralised connectivity and increased bandwidth. The LAN (Local Area Network) was also upgraded to allow for a more efficient flow of data and power over ethernet (POE). A Splicecom Business VoIP Phone System was installed which effectively runs free of charge over the same network by utilising already available bandwidth.

James Holley, Guild Care’s IT Manager explains “MintTec’s solution was a clear winner. Not only did they offer a solution that met all our design criteria, they actually exceeded it: We ended up with a significantly upgraded WAN, LAN and a new enterprise voice system but without needing to increase our overall existing budget.

The benefit of upgrading to a high performance network option for multiple sites – Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network with EFM tails is increased bandwidth, reliability and it enables Guild Care to run time sensitive applications such as IP voice over one single network for data and voice allowing for a lower cost of ownership.

Implementation

The new WAN was installed and the LAN upgraded using Cisco POE switches.

Splicecom Call Servers were installed at each site with IP handsets being provided to all staff.

An Splicecom Operator Console was installed at the head office to provide additional data to assist with the efficient handling of calls.

For greater mobility of the nursing staff based in the Care Homes Spectralink Wi-Fi handsets were installed.

The solution was further enhanced by Splicecom ‘Vision’ reporting providing info on every area of the voice system, be it real time or historic, user or departmental enabling the system to be tailored to the business’ needs to enhance and improve the way it operates.
